KENGO MARC BROWN AKIMOTO, BORN IN TOKYO,
2000

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a multidisciplinary artist, born in Tokyo, based in Birmingham. My works revolve around my cultural identity, heritage and racial contradistinction, embedding themes including home, language and invisibility.

'the gap between me and you' series, 2022 involves the abstracted self-portrait sculptures and painting installations capturing the disconnected shadows of the sculptures. This originated from an interest the in "perception gap" that occurs in social situations between the self and peer. Developing two conflicting identities and personas that cannot be both outputted in the same occasion rooting from a bilingual and bicultural upbringing, I wanted to blur the lines of indifference in what is shown and perceived of which are equally important to be recognised, documented and occupy a physical capacity.
